A baby orca was born earlier this week in J-Pod, bringing the total number of southern resident orcas up to 86. Unfortunately, calf mortality rates are high, and the southern residents are an endangered population. But hope is strong with this little one! The mother J-37, is eleven years old. x
Hey so I just got back from Washington with my family which was really ridiculously pretty. Also, we went kayaking at one point just for the fun, since the whales hadn’t been around for about a week. Then all of a sudden a whole pod of whales swims up along the coast, along and beneath our boats, some about ten feet away from us. We got to watch one belly flop. We learned about the calf a day later, and wondered if we’d seen the mother in labor.
